Maintenance:
With proper care, Helle knives are designed to retain their sharpness for lifelong outdoor use.
• Wipe the blade with a soft cloth if wet and treat with grease occasionally
• Dry the handle with a soft cloth if wet and wax occasionally
• To keep sheath leather supple, treat regularly with grease or wax; dry sheath carefully at room temperature if it becomes wet

Sharpening:
Use a diamond tool or a wet stone for sharpening.
• Place knife bevel flat to sharpening tool and work entire blade
• To establish an edge, work one side until you feel a slight burr on opposite side; switch side and repeat until you feel burr on first side
• Remove burr by stroking blade gently over sharpening surface on both sides, as if cutting very thin slices—keep bevel flat towards sharpener and move side-to-side until burr is gone

(If blade is very dull or damaged, use a fine-grained grindstone and plenty of water and sharpen until you have a raw edge. Use ample cooling liquid and never sharpen on a dry stone. A hot-ground edge loses its heat treatment and ruins the blade.)
